Claude Developer vs Architect: Which Certification First?
Both count toward Claude Partner Network tier. Here's how to choose between the Claude Certified Developer and Architect – Foundations exams based on your role and goals.
You've decided to get Claude certified and you're staring at two Foundations exams that both cost $125 and both count toward Claude Partner Network tier. Which one first?
The short answer: if you write code for a living, take Developer first. But the full answer depends on what you do day to day.
They test genuinely different skills

Choose Developer if…
You call the Messages API directly, you've wired up a tool or two, and you enjoy reading API docs. A third of the exam is Applications & Integration — if that's your daily reality, it's the fastest credential to earn and the strongest signal to a hiring team.
The one thing that trips up strong engineers:
Choose Architect if…
You spend more time in diagrams than in editors. You decide fork vs. subagent, hook vs. prompt, and when the Batch API pays for itself — and you have to defend those calls to other engineers. Architect rewards judgement over syntax.

Developer first — best signal-per-dollar. Add Architect when you move into design and review work.

If you're at a partner firm
Either counts toward tier, so start with whichever matches more of your team's billable work. Then broaden coverage with the second.

Neither yet — take Associate – Foundations first. Note it does not count toward partner tier.
